Journey south

Monday 31 August 2015
Our convoy now encompasses 7 vehicles. The traffic on the Stuart Highway was horrendous. Everyone was in a hurry to get home and they didn't want to sit behind slow old military vehicles. Trucks loaded with vehicles and tractors, old cars and vehicles towing caravans were all in a rush with some overtaking too close to our vehicles and without vision as to what was coming in the opposite direction. When we stopped at the next roadhouse we saw a lot of the vehicles that had passed us also at the roadhouse so they didn't gain much!

We were pleased when we left the highway at Kulgera and headed east towards Oodnadatta. Our journey was again on unsealed roads and concentration at a premium. The campsite for the night was in the geographical centre of Australia at  Lambert. It was  signposted as a 4x4 track.  As 3 of the vehicles were 4x2 we knew we had the backup if required.  The road was very sandy and washed away in places and hard going for the  2 wheel drive trucks. At times there were 2 tracks and you hoped that you chose the right one.  We got bogged on a sandy corner and had to be towed out by the Unimog. There was a substantial structure  marking the centre of Australia so lots of pictures were taken with the trucks beside the marker. At the campfire that night Jim got a bit of ribbing about having to be towed out of the sand.
